Bottom‐up as well as top‐down processes govern zoobenthic secondary production in a tidal‐flat ecosystem

چکیده
For decades, we monitored numbers and weights of the macrozoobenthos in a vast tidal-flat area Dutch Wadden Sea. We used data collected since 1992 to estimate annual secondary production. Data on chlorophyll concentrations primary production were available for nearby tidal inlet, showing rapid increases late 1970s gradual declines 1980s. The benthos responded with doubling biomass around 1980 summer biomass, as well seasonal gain 1992–2019 de-eutrophication period. In nearly all years, bivalves (on average 25.5 gAFDM m−2 yr−1) accounted more than half total zoobenthic (averaging 42.7 yr−1). Production values individual years not correlated or that year, but did show significantly positive relationship bivalve recruitment success preceding year. As was governed by predation pressure early bottom stages, it is top-down process. Bottom-up processes expressed gradually declining long-term trend growth rates during period also few when so high reduced food competition. far most animals too low fully exploit carrying capacity system increased linearly recruitment.

Insects as drivers of ecosystem processes
Insects and other small invertebrates are ubiquitous components of all terrestrial and freshwater food webs, but their cumulative biomass is small relative to plants and microbes. As a result, it is often assumed that these animals make relatively minor contributions to ecosystem processes. Despite their small sizes and cumulative biomass, we suggest that these animals may commonly have importa...
متن کاملthe significance of conjunction as a cohesive device in teaching writing
the research questions were as follows: 1. is there any relationship between the students concious awareness of the form and implications of the conjuncations and their improvement in using appropriate conjunctions? 2. does students knowledge of the from and the implications of the conjunctions help them to produce more coherent writings. 3. does a comparison between english conjunctions and th...

Are we cutting down tropical forests too rapidly and too extensively? If so, why? Answers to both questions are obscured in some ways by insufficient and unreliable data on the economic worth of forest ecosystem services. It is clear, however, that rapid, excessive cutting of forests can irreversibly and substantively impair ecosystem functions, thereby endangering the flow of several socially ...
متن کاملStress as a modifier of biodiversity effects on ecosystem processes?
Does stress, defined as a reduction in growth by external constraints, modify biodiversity effects on ecosystem functioning? That is, are diversity effects stronger under stressful, as opposed to favourable conditions? The study by Fugère et al. (2012) in this issue borrows the stress-gradient hypothesis from plant ecology to explore this issue in an aquatic detritus-detritivore system. Althoug...
متن کاملNovel index for quantification of ecosystem effects of fishing as removal of secondary production
Exploited ecosystems are characterised by exports of secondary production from each fished trophic level that reduce the energy available for upper levels at the ecosystem scale, thus impinging on overall secondary production. Depletion in secondary production is proposed here as a proxy for quantifying the ecosystem effects of fishing. Theoretical analysis of trophic web interactions permits t...
